Program Notes
When I was still a small child in the 1980s, China was beginning to undergo dramatic and sweeping economic and cultural changes. During his lifetime, the influential poet Hai Zi was neither understood nor appreciated, and his idealistic dreams were shattered. In 1989, he killed himself by lying in front of an oncoming train, ending his poetry at the age of 25. I only became acquainted with his unique and sensitive poems many years after his death. Touched by his wholly innocent heart and tremendous emotional struggles, this piece is dedicated to a generation that left their passion, ideals, and simplicity behind in the 1980s. With my immense gratitude this work is written in honor of Chou Wen-chung.

在我还是一个孩子的1980年代，是中国的经济，文化发生剧变，也是青年诗人海子 ，梦想破灭的时代。充满幻想而不得志的诗人在1989年选择卧轨来结束他年轻的生命。许多年过去，当我不再是一个孩子的时候才读到了海子纯净，浪漫的诗。这首作品是对一代人失落在80年代的热情，童真，和对海子纯洁的内心 ，苦苦的情感挣扎的纪念。同时表达我对周文中先生的感激和景仰。
