Wang Lu: An Atlas of Time
New Focus Recordings (fcr277)
November 20, 2020
Composer Wang Lu releases An Atlas of Time, her second recording on New Focus, featuring two large ensemble works performed by the Boston Modern Orchestra Project (BMOP). The album title, also the title of the opening work, provides an apt metaphor for Wang Lu's work; her integration of Eastern and Western influences into her compositional style is less about a fusion of styles as it is about tapping into a cartography of her own personal memory and experiences. In this sense, Wang Lu works with "found sounds" that resonate within her own psyche but obliquely reference larger cultural touchstones.

New Focus Recordings (fcr197)
March 16, 2018
Composer Wang Lu brings a wide range of influences to her work, ranging from her background growing up and studying in China to the prism of contemporary instrumental techniques and new sonic possibilities. Throughout this debut portrait recording, featuring performances by Ensemble Intercontemporain, International Contemporary Ensemble, Alarm Will Sound, Third Sound Ensemble, and Ensemble Nouvel Moderne, Wang Lu's openness, curiosity, and joie de vivre is balanced with her deft craft and command over orchestration, harmonic color, and gesture.

Living Language
Jacob Greenberg
January 20, 2023
Unconstrained musical tendrils flow separately and converge, arriving at moments of distillation. Streams sprawl, quiver, pulsate, and flourish. Constellations are held apart at a distance, yet are intimately and tenderly connected through their shared material. The temporal and timbral fluidity from ancient qin improvisation inspired the confluence of gestures and harmonic colors, making this piece both contemplative and a spontaneous exploration. This commission is dedicated to Jacob Greenberg with admiration. —Wang Lu

Quaking Aspen | Stephanie Lamprea
New Focus Recordings (fcr313), January 7, 2022
Quaking Aspen is the debut solo album of Colombian-American soprano Stephanie Lamprea. An architect of new sounds and expressions as a performer specializing in contemporary-classical repertoire, Lamprea uses her coloratura voice as a mechanism of avant-garde performance art, creating “maniacal shifts of vocal production and character… like an icepick through the skull” (Jason Eckardt).
Alone Together | Jennifer Koh
Cedille Records, August 27, 2021
The sound of distant sirens breaking through the peaceful night has been a constant reminder of the pandemic. I took that alternating two-note motive and transformed it into a soaring melody for the violin. This piece is dedicated to Jennifer Koh, whose masterful playing and fierce character continue to inspire me.
